Pest Library Ants Beatles Cockroaches Centipedes Flies Mosquitoes Spiders Bees Wasps Rodents Ants Ants can be difficult to control due to how easy it is to invade homes. They can slip into your house through even the tiniest cracks, and cause a real problem. Most ants seek the nourishment of water, or greasy foods left behind in your kitchen pantry and food storage rooms. Once ants find those food sources, they leave a trail of pheromones for the rest of the worker ants to follow. Most people believe that home remedies and off the shelf ant pesticides will do the trick, but what they don't know is that different types of ants require different treatments, and most home remedies won't affect the ants at the nest. Here's what you should know about the life cycle of ants: Eggs: The first part of the ant metamorphosis is the egg, which is laid by the queen. The queen ants finds a safe and sheltered place to begin laying eggs and start a nest or colony. Larvae: The second part of the metamorphosis begins after about 1 or 2 weeks of being in the egg stage. The larvae hatches the adult ants are responsible for feeding its constant appetite. Pupae: Pupae look very similar to adult ants, however they are usually white and their antennae and legs are compressed to its body. They will stay in this form until ready to go out into the world. Adult Ant: After the pupae stage is completed, the ant will have any one of various jobs 鈥?depending on the species. It will either become a worker, food gatherer or if a fertile female, an egg layer. Beatles Scientists have identified nearly 350,000 types of beetles making them the largest species of insects in the world though only 25,000 of those have been identified in the Unites States. Beatles are commonly mistaken as cockroaches with the main difference being the vertical line that the wings form down the back of a beetle. The diet and behavior of a beetle varies greatly depending on its species. Similar to ants, beetles develop in a four-stage metamorphosis. Common Types of Beatles: Billbug Asian Lady Beetles Powderpost Beetles Longhorned Beetles American Spider Beetles Dried Fruit Beetles Cigarette Beetles Carpet Beetles Cockroaches Cockroaches, another common pest, can enter the home through many avenues however they most commonly enter through grocery bags, or moving boxes. They emit unpleasant odors, and can carry nasty diseases due to hanging around rotting waste. Cockroaches are a nocturnal insect, so if you've seen any by day then they were probably forced out of the nest due to overcrowding, and is a likely sign of a severe infestation. A lot of off the shelf pesticides won't be effective due to cockroach eggs being naturally resistant to most of the pesticides. Cockroaches are also much better at hiding then you are at finding them. Centipedes The name centipede is actually very misleading because it means 100 legs; however, they can have anywhere from 15 to 177 pairs of legs. A centipedes diet consists of other small insects such as spiders, ants, flies, and cockroaches. However some larger centipedes can produce bite as painful as bee stings when handled, and shouldnt be living inside your home. Centipedes are nocturnal and typically dwell in damp places. If left inside your home they can lay eggs and cause a sever infestation. Flies Flies are one of the most common instects due to their fast ability to reproduce. Two flies and their offspring's can produce up to a million other flies in a matter of weeks. Flies harbor more diseases then any other insect, and carry diseases such as Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and E. coli. Flies need to land often due to having only two wings, and when they do they slough off thousands of bacteria which is what causes the ailments. Mosquitoes Mosquitoes are most known for their bite that leaves a red bump and itches; however, their diet also contains nectar from flowers. They are most commonly found between the periods of dusk and dawn. Their bite might be annoying, but one of the worst things is that they are carriers of diseases such as West Nile which can cause sever ailments after being bitten. They commonly reproduce in still or stagnant water, and can lay eggs at a very rapid rate. Spiders Over ten thousand species of spiders have been found throughout the world ranging from small to large, and deadly to non-deadly. Spiders like to hide in dark places, and spin webs to catch prey. They don't have working mouthparts, so they use digestive enzymes in their saliva to break down food until they can swallow. Most spiders are harmless and can cause little to no problems; however, spiders such as the Black Widow or the Brown Recluse have incredibly potent venom which can cause serious injury, and even death. Bees Known mostly for their harvesting of nectar to produce honey and spreading of nourishment to plants. Bees are incredibly good for the environment; however, their sting can be very unexpected and cause small to large amounts of pain. Some people are born allergic to the sting of a bee, which can cause severe injury if stung or even death. Due to their very annoying sting most people don't want these insects flying around their house, or creating a hive in any unwanted places. Wasps Wasps are most commonly known for their ability to sting multiple times in one attack. Unlike bees, they don't die after one bite, which causes them to be much more threatening than most bees. However, similiar to bees they do act as a pollinator, and are beneficial to most wildlife. Wasps can either be social and live with a hive, or be predators and live on their own. Predator wasps eat other small insects, and are used in agriculture as a type of organic pest control. Rodents Rodents can often be hard to manage and control on your own due to their unique habits and biology. There are many different types of rodents, though the most common are rats and mice. Below are some things you should know about these pests: Mice: Mice will invade your home or office in search of warmth, food and water. Mice can also contaminate significantly more than they consume, increasing the risk of disease spread. Rats: Rats are very consciously aware rodents that are sensitive to changes in their environment, which can include traps, baits and even rat control substances. This can force them to hide in hard to reach places like attics and walls. Rats are also known to spread various diseases and can carry parasites like ticks and fleas into your home. Rodents are not only able to spread disease and sickness, but they鈥檙e known for causing serious home damages by burrowing and gnawing. They are also very destructive to agricultural communities as well as gardens and crops. Seeking professional assistance will most likely be needed.
